Without wishing to sound like a grumpy old golfer (I’ll leave that to Martin!), in my day it was all so different.
Unlike now where there are so many competitions and events, my captaincy year had two distinct highlights and both memorable for different reasons.
In the
My second highlight was playing alongside Terry Lord when he decided to play kamikaze golf from the 6th tee. The beautiful new stone tee markers had just been laid, Terry cracked his drive long and low only to hit the ladies tee marker face on. His ball came back towards us at a tremendous speed, and fortunately we all managed to duck just in time, as it passed us and landed more than 50 yards behind the 6th tee!
On a more serious note, I had the honour of being captain when the new course was opened. It was great to see a significant amount of money invested in the course and facilities. My Captain’s Day was a great success thanks to the efforts of the committee without whose help we would never have raised £400 for my chosen charity, Harris Hospice.
It all seems so long ago and, indeed, I can remember the days where we had a membership of 12 people and there was no start list, just simply turn up, tee off and play. I even used to win competitions in those days!
