Opening Rounds May/June
Round 1 Dave Hannay v Phil Ashford Venue: Bromley GC Saturday the 24.05.14 The match started in steady rain on a nearly empty course. Phil went into a 2 hole lead after 3 holes, but Dave fought back to level after 5 and went on to be 2 up after 8 but Phil won the 9th to reduce the deficit. The rain had relented by now and avoiding the puddles Phil won the next 2 holes to go 1 up, only for Dave to win the two holes after that to put himself 1 up. Phil won the 14th to square the match with 4 holes left to play and won the 15th to take a one hole lead. Dave halved the 16th but had to concede on the 17th to leave Phil the winner 2 & 1.
Bernie Whitmarsh v Andy Howes Venue: Bromley GC Thursday the 15.05.14 We both started off going down the right with Andy punching out of the trees followed by a chip onto the green and him 2 putting for 5,myself a chip over the bunker and rolling off the green followed by a 3 putt saw us share the hole. Andy then recomposed himself with a great tee off up the left followed by a second great shot onto the green leaving a 6 footer for par, myself was 3 off the tee, a couple of fluffed shots later Andy’s 1up. After Andy pushed his tee shot on the 3rd left i managed to hit a good 7 iron onto the green 20 foot short, after a miss hit 2nd by Andy. I two putted for par and the hole to go back to levels, I then followed this up with another par on the fourth to go 1up only for Andy to then take the 5th to go back to levels and the 6th with a great par to go 1up again, the match was going back and forth which continued on the 7th with me taking the hole with a 5 after a couple of miss hit chip by Andy, levels again. The 8th didn't start to well for both of us with shots along the ground of the tee, a good 6 iron followed by to 2 crap shots by myself and 2 good shots by the Capt saw him take the hole and go 1up again, this was followed by a great par by him on the 9th with a 5 foot miss by myself to half it saw him go 2up for the first time in the match. AT THE TURN The 10th did go any better for myself losing out to the Capt again to go 3 down to him, walking off the 10th thinking i need a little bit of help here my preys were answered, not by the golfing God but by Andy after he hit a 2 iron into the ditch followed by a great shot out of the ditch to put himself on the back of the green leaving a 45 foot putt for birdie and after 2 good shots by myself left me a gentle R\L putt done the hill leaving a 2 footer for par, Andy 3 putted for bogey,2 down. I then went on to take the next 2 holes 12th and 13th after a wayward shot off the tee by Andy, losing his ball and gifting me the hole and a par from me on the 13th left the match all square once again. On the 14th we both had very similar shot up the right with both our 2nd shot ending up roughly in the same location on the green. The Capt to putt first L\R 14 footer doesn't turn and stays high and finishes 4 foot past the hole, same putt for me, slightly shorter, hit it a bit hard but good line hits the back off the hole hard and drops to go 1 up. The 15th saw us both take bogey to half the hole, and then i managed to bogey the 17th to take myself 2up with 2 to play. And after taking a 6 on the 17th to half the hole with Andy I won the match by 2&1
Russ Newman v Mark Nelson Venue: High Elms GC Monday the 26.05.14 The game started in Russ’s favour winning the 1st and 2nd. It was then nip and tuck until the 8th when Russ won this and the ninth. So 3 up at the turn, but Mark did not give in and continued to play solid golf, which paid off by winning the next 4 holes to go 1 up after 13 holes. The 14th should have been Russ’s but a missed putt and a halved hole. So Mark still 1 up at 15. Another hole Russ should have won but going for the win allowed Mark to par and go 2 up. A fight back at 17th with Russ getting a par to pull back to one down. Mark then kept his solid game going to come in with a par on the 18th and win by 1 hole. A great round right until the end.
Steve Snell v Thomas Skellingsted Venue: High Elms GC Saturday the 17.05.14 I beat Thomas on the last hole.
